Water Issues of India

No water, No life, No blue, No green. A perfect quote by Sylvia Earle describing the importance of water in the world.

India as the world 2nd populous country struggling with water crisis and water quality. There are several causes and work responsible for today's problems, some of the points reflected below:-

Causes for Water issues in India

i) Population:-

One of the problems lies in our population, as we are the 2nd most populous country in the world, we only have 1000 cubic meters per person water, a nation is termed low on water when it has 1700 cubic meters per person per year.India's rank in water availability is 132.
Usage of water relies upon the wastage of water, education on saving water and economical usage of water is still needed.Several initiatives were taken by the government to protect water wastage.(According to Population data during counting in 2011)

ii) Wastage:-

Inefficient use of water in agricultural department, agriculture and irrigation use almost 70% of water in India.Traditional techniques of irrigation responsible for wastage of water. High evaporation rate, drainage and over-use of underground water.Independent use of submersible and reckless use of underground water, as everyone in fields, gets a borewell (digging underground water) to fulfill his needs despite groundwater level.
Several initiatives for use of micro-irrigation techniques started as India makes deals with Israel.

iii) Drainage:-

Throwing garbage, plastics and harmful chemicals in the water bodies cause the deterioration of rivers or water bodies. Harmful chemicals not only degrade the quality of water but kills the water animals leading to dis-balance in ecology. Our holy rivers were continuously polluted, Quality of Ganges River degraded and Yamuna river is now a "Sewage water".  Rivers were continuously poisoned and that water due to lack of water treatment plants supplied to rural areas and peoples get affected due to it.

Ways to Save Water

i) Water quality:- Setting up the new and improvised water treatment centers in rural areas as well as in urban areas. India stands 122 in water quality rank.Around 163M peoples in India lack safe water, most of they come from rural areas. Approximately 500 children die per day from Diarrhea in India alone.
21% of communicable diseases spread through water only. Regardless of hardworking scientists, improving facilities and technologies due to the shortage of modern technology and human resources we are not able to achieve our targets.

ii) Efficiency:- Whether it be agriculture or domestic use water should be used efficiently, Rainwater harvesting plays an important role in it where rainwater gets collected and can be used for irrigation process. Micro-irrigation can be used that saves gallons of water and increases plant growth. 10% of total water is used in domestic work in India.

At last always remember, जल है तो जीवन है।
